v.
zeitgeist - the transpersonal effect
These
outer planetary archetypes are the wellspring from which the great writers
and poets dip their pen, the artist receives inspiration, and where
religious symbolism derives its magnetic potency.4
The individual self can only journey so far before it becomes aware
of a relationship with the culture he or she is part of. The outer,
or transpersonal, planets are considered beyond the personal realm of
astrological interpretation given the amount of time they take to orbit
the Sun, therefore creating a generational influence through the signs.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto represent a collective experience, and are
useful for describing how consciousness manifests and evolves in the
context of different cultures over time. As such, they are known as
‘major teachers.’ We are able to locate the evolution of
self in culture by highlighting the historical significance of these
planets, by viewing the dominant perceptions and events throughout time
and even suggesting what lies ahead by looking at such influential,
or reflective, paradigms. The symbology of the gods comes into play
as we muse upon the levels of consciousness they represent. Awareness
gradually expands to a point where the self becomes but a grain of sand,
shaped and shifted by the tides.
Generally speaking, Uranus represents knowledge and change; Neptune
- mystical perception; and Pluto - primal power. Together, they are
the ‘higher octaves’ of the personal planets, meaning they
relate to the collective energies in the cosmos rather than the individual,
although they affect/reflect all levels of conscious life. As such,
they are considered to relate, energetically, to higher vibrational
fields and thus interact with the subtle realm to a greater degree.
With Neptune currently in Aquarius, Uranus having just passed through,
and Pluto in Sagittarius, this is a prime time of technological development,
transformation in thought, openness to spiritual and alternative perception
(beyond the mainstream) and a philosophical change in belief systems
through either flowing transformation or rigid cataclysmic upheaval.
Jeff Green notes, ‘A simple review of history tells the story
of cultural and societal restructuring when this pattern happened before.’5
He refers to the Industrial Revolution of the 1820s and 30s.
The paradigm
shifts of these planetary energies help us to consciously navigate through
time and space.
